A team of mountaineers from Pune's Giripremi group has successfully scaled the world's highest peak, Mount Everest, after a challenging 50-day expedition. The team, comprising experienced climbers, reached the summit on May 22, 2024, at 6:30 AM local time.
Expedition Details
The expedition began on April 2, 2024, from the base camp in Nepal. The team followed the standard South Col route, facing extreme weather conditions and treacherous terrain. The climbers spent weeks acclimatizing at various camps before making the final push to the summit.
Team Composition
The team included six core members and three Sherpa guides. The leader, Umesh Zirpe, expressed pride in the team's perseverance and teamwork. The youngest member, 28-year-old Priya Jadhav, became the first woman from Pune to summit Everest this season.
Challenges Overcome
The climbers encountered severe snowstorms and low visibility near the Hillary Step. They also had to navigate through the Khumbu Icefall, which is considered one of the most dangerous sections of the climb. Despite these obstacles, the team maintained their pace and coordination.
Significance
This achievement adds to Giripremi's legacy, which has organized several successful expeditions, including climbs of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Aconcagua. The team's success is a testament to their rigorous training and meticulous planning.
The climbers are expected to return to Pune by the end of May, where they will be welcomed with a celebratory event. The expedition was supported by various sponsors and the Maharashtra state government.
