Uttarakhand to Host Niti Extreme Ultra Run 2026

The Uttarakhand government is set to host the Niti Extreme Ultra Run 2026 from May 31 to June 2, as part of its efforts to transform Niti Valley into a premier adventure tourism destination. This event, themed "Beyond the Canyon," will be the second ultra marathon held near the China border in Chamoli district, following the Adi Kailash ultra marathon.

Record-Breaking Altitude

Officials have confirmed that the ultra run will secure its place as the sixth highest-altitude ultra run globally and the fourth in India. The route's highest point, Rimkhim, stands at 4,384 meters, where participants will contend with thin oxygen, biting winds, rugged terrain, and extreme altitude challenges.

Race Details

A 75-kilometer ultra run will commence from Rimkhim, passing through Sumna, the Grand Canyon stretch, and Malari, before culminating at Niti village. Additionally, a 42-kilometer marathon will be conducted in a loop within Niti village. A significant portion of the route lies at an elevation of 10,000 feet.

Registration and Support

So far, 908 runners from 27 Indian states and two foreign countries have registered. All participants must undergo a mandatory medical check-up. Medical teams, support stations, and emergency helicopter services will be available throughout the event. The Tourism Department, along with the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Indian Army, will provide security and logistics support.

Economic Impact

Tourism Secretary Dheeraj Garbyal stated, "After the Kailash Ultra Marathon on November 10, 2025, the logo of the Niti Extreme Ultra Run was unveiled by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. Since then, the capacity of registered homestays in Niti Valley has grown from 35 rooms to over 265, with bed capacity surpassing 630. Residents have started converting their traditional homes into attractive homestays, providing direct economic benefits to villagers."

Vision for the Future

Garbyal added that like Mana Valley, Niti Valley is poised to become a major tourism center. "Neglected after the 1962 war, the government is now undertaking numerous construction works in the region. Despite attractions such as Dronagiri trekking, Timmarsain Mahadev, and Bhavishya Badri, Niti Valley remained off the radar of tourists," he said. Large-scale events like the ultra marathon are helping to brand the region and attract visitors.
