The 5th edition of the Chandigarh Golf League (CGL) is set to feature a players' auction on July 12 at the Chandigarh Golf Club (CGC) premises. As many as 224 CGC members have applied to be part of the auction, from which 144 players will be allotted to 24 teams. The tournament itself is scheduled from September 30 to October 31.
Auction Details and Team Composition
Each team will consist of 10 core members, with an additional six players acquired through the auction. This marks a reduction from the previous year, where each team picked eight players from the auction. According to Dr. GS Kochhar, a member of the CGL organising committee, 'Last year, a team had picked eight players each from the auction in addition to their 10 core group members. However, this year, the number of players inducted through the auction has been reduced to six. Since the CGL comprises 24 teams, 144 players will be up for grabs through the open auction. Last year, the CGL was played between 21 teams, and 168 players were allotted through the auction.'
New Teams and Revenue Generation
Three new teams have been introduced for the 2026 edition: Tac Eagle, Capital Golfers, and Birdie Brigade. These teams were auctioned in June, generating significant revenue for the organising committee. The teams were owned by Lt Gen IS Singha, Robin Aggarwal, and Rakesh Kapur, attracting bids of Rs 65 lakh, Rs 63 lakh, and Rs 61 lakh respectively. Six prospective bidders had deposited the required amount to participate in the auction, but several fell short as bidding exceeded their anticipated budgets. The bidders included Lt Gen IS Singha, Robin Aggarwal, GS Jawandha, Vijay Gupta, Rakesh Kapur, and Rajinder Singh Pammy.
Previous Edition Highlights
The CGC awarded a prize money of nearly Rs 34 lakh in the last edition of the event. The CGL-2025 edition was won by Mulligans, who defeated Punjab Aces in the final. The Captain's 18 secured third place by beating Sultans of Swing 5-2 in the bronze medal play-off. With the introduction of three new teams and a streamlined auction process, the upcoming edition promises to be highly competitive.
