Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has arrived in Dallas with the national team ahead of their FIFA World Cup round of 16 clash against Spain, scheduled for July 7 at 12:30 AM IST.
Clash of Generations
Spain vs Portugal is set to be a generational showdown, pitting the 41-year-old Ronaldo against 18-year-old Spanish prodigy Lamine Yamal. Spain, the 2010 champions, have not conceded a goal in any of their World Cup 2026 matches so far, while Portugal has yet to deliver a complete performance against top-tier opponents.
Ronaldo greeted fans in Dallas via an Instagram story with the caption, “Hello Dallas.”
Record-Breaking Feats
In Portugal's round of 32 win over Croatia, Ronaldo became the first player to feature in a World Cup knockout match at age 41 or older. The match also marked the first time two outfield players aged 40 or above appeared in a World Cup game, with Ronaldo against former Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric.
Ronaldo also became the oldest goalscorer in World Cup knockout history at 41 years and 147 days, scoring his first-ever World Cup knockout goal.
Portugal's Tournament Journey
Portugal began with a lackluster 1-1 draw against DR Congo, where Ronaldo faced criticism for a poor performance. They rebounded with a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan, with Ronaldo scoring twice. Nuno Mendes and Rafael Leao also found the net, and an own goal by Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov added to the scoreline.
Ronaldo's brace made him Portugal's all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 10 goals, surpassing Eusebio's record of nine. He also became the first player to score in six different World Cup tournaments, ending a 10-match goalless streak in major competitions.
Road to Round of 16
Portugal secured their round of 32 spot with a goalless draw against Colombia. Against Croatia, they came from behind to win 2-1, with goals from Ronaldo and Goncalo Ramos.
