Following the Phoenix Suns' 107-120 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series, star guard Devin Booker launched a scathing critique of NBA referee James Williams over a controversial technical foul call. Booker, clearly frustrated after the defeat, did not hold back in his post-game media session, claiming that the state of refereeing has become so poor that fans might start believing they are watching WWE.
Booker Calls Out Referee by Name
The incident occurred late in the third quarter when Booker dove toward the courtside seats to save a loose ball. The ball struck Thunder forward Jaylin Williams and went out of bounds, but the official ruled that Booker had committed a technical foul after a verbal exchange. Booker believed Thunder guard Alex Caruso influenced the decision, and he expressed his anger directly.
In his 11-year NBA career, Booker stated he had never called out a referee by name until now. He said, 'In my 11 years [in the NBA], I haven't called a ref out by name, but James [Williams] was terrible tonight through and through. It's bad for the sport, bad for the integrity of the sport. People are going to start viewing this as WWE if they're not held responsible.'
Frustration Built Over Two Incidents
Booker's frustration stemmed from two separate calls in the first half. Earlier, he was called for an offensive foul after making an 'unnatural move' to make contact with Alex Caruso. Moments later, on the other end of the court, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander committed a nearly identical foul but was not penalized, which upset Booker further. Later, when Booker accidentally struck Jalen Williams while attempting to prevent the ball from going out of bounds, the referee granted the Thunder's request for a technical foul, leaving Booker bewildered.
Booker continued his critique, saying, 'It's hard, and it just feels disrespectful. I know I haven't won a championship in this league, but I have been in it for 11 years now, so to get to this point to be treated like that, for me to even be saying something out loud, it's bad.' He added, 'It's my first time in 11 years, but it's needed. Whatever, I get fined for it, everybody can pull the clips and see where the frustration comes from.'
Suns Face 0-2 Hole
Despite Booker's 22 points, the Suns were unable to overcome the Thunder, losing 120-107. The Suns now trail 0-2 in the series and will look to bounce back in Game 3 at home on Saturday. Booker's outburst highlights growing concerns about officiating consistency in the NBA playoffs, with the star guard warning that the league risks losing credibility if referees are not held accountable.
