Deschamps Calls for Improved Attacking Efficiency Despite Dominance
France head coach Didier Deschamps has demanded more efficiency in attack from his team ahead of their FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal clash against Morocco. Speaking to the media in Boston on July 9, Deschamps emphasized the need for sharper finishing, even though France has been the tournament's highest-scoring side with 14 goals.
France, led by Kylian Mbappe, will face Morocco—the first African nation to reach the World Cup semifinals in 2022—in a rematch of that semifinal. Morocco, under Achraf Hakimi, eliminated the Netherlands in the round of 32 via penalties and are aiming to upset the two-time champions.
France's Attacking Firepower
France boasts a formidable attack featuring Mbappe, hat-trick hero Ousmane Dembele, assist-machine Michael Olise, and Bradley Barcola. They scored three or more goals in each of their first four matches, until a physically intense clash against Paraguay slowed their momentum. Mbappe scored a match-sealing penalty in that game, which saw tempers flare on both sides.
Mbappe is among the leading contenders for the Golden Boot with seven goals, just one behind Lionel Messi. However, Deschamps stressed that efficiency is more important than volume. "We have to be efficient, offensively speaking. In all the areas, both teams have strong assets. We are efficient, but we could have done better on this front. Sometimes you have six chances and score two goals, and sometimes you have two chances and score twice. It is more important to be efficient," said Deschamps, as quoted by Reuters.
Morocco a Different Challenge
Deschamps warned that Morocco's profile is different from Paraguay's. "Morocco's profile is not the one of Paraguay. We met them four years ago in the semi-finals. They played the AFCON (Africa Cup of Nations) final. They have top individuals. They are not here to play. They are here to win. We have to be ready and perform and deliver against this great team," he added.
Injury Update on Tchouameni
Regarding midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, who missed the Paraguay match due to a muscle injury, Deschamps said: "He feels better, but I left early from the hotel this morning. I cannot say more. He might take part in training today. All other players are available."
