Kounde Highlights Paraguay's Counter-Attack Threat
France defender Jules Kounde has warned that Paraguay is a physical team capable of exploiting counter-attacks, ahead of their FIFA World Cup round of 16 clash on July 5 at 2:30 AM IST in Philadelphia. Speaking to L'Équipe, Kounde said: "You like to emphasise that Paraguay is a tenacious team, but they also have quality and the players to exploit counter-attacks. They have a physical team that can be dangerous on the counter-attack. We expect a difficult match, and we know that we will have to be strong in the duels, to impose our physicality to be effective with the ball."
Paraguay's Aggressive Style and Yellow Card Record
Kounde's observation aligns with Paraguay's aggressive gameplay. According to L'Équipe, Paraguay has received nine yellow cards in four matches, reflecting their tenacious and physical approach. France's Bradley Barcola, who has scored two goals and provided one assist so far, also noted Paraguay's defensive quality: "They defend a lot and are going to put in a lot of hard tackles. They are a team that defends a lot, a South American team. We know they are going to put in a lot of hard tackles. But they are still a good team to play football, we saw that against Germany. They had a good preparation, they managed to qualify, and that's not by chance."
France's Dominant Group Stage Performance
France has been one of the standout teams in the group stage, winning all four matches, scoring 13 goals and conceding only two. Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, and Bradley Barcola have combined for 12 of those goals, showcasing France's attacking firepower. Despite this dominance, captain Kylian Mbappe and head coach Didier Deschamps have cautioned against underestimating Paraguay. Mbappe said: "I'm fully aware of what's at stake, where I am and what I have to do. The team know what they have to do here as well. A new competition is starting."
Deschamps Warns Against Complacency
Deschamps dismissed any suggestion that Paraguay's place in the round of 16 was a surprise, after they eliminated four-time champions Germany in the round of 32. "I've watched Paraguay: what they have achieved is no accident," he said. The match promises to be an exciting contest between France's relentless attack and Paraguay's disciplined, counter-attacking style.
