Sheinbaum Commends Team's Effort After Heartbreaking Defeat
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum lauded the national football team's spirited FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign following a 3-2 Round of 16 loss to England, urging the players to keep moving forward. The match, played in front of home supporters, saw Mexico mount a determined fightback but ultimately fall short.
Reacting on social media platform X, Sheinbaum wrote: "Cheer up! Sometimes you win and sometimes you learn; what's important is to keep moving forward and represent Mexico with pride." She added: "What the young players of the National Team achieved lives forever in the hearts of all Mexicans."
Mexico's World Cup Journey Ends in Dramatic Fashion
England advanced to the quarter-finals despite playing much of the second half with 10 men after defender Jarell Quansah was sent off in the 54th minute. The Three Lions struck twice early through Jude Bellingham, who headed home from Bukayo Saka's cross and later finished after Harry Kane capitalized on a Mexican turnover. Mexico responded before halftime with Julian Quinones firing past Jordan Pickford from close range.
England restored their two-goal cushion when Anthony Gordon was fouled in the penalty area, allowing Kane to convert from the spot for his sixth goal of the tournament. Mexico were awarded a penalty after a VAR review adjudged Kane to have fouled Brian Gutierrez, with Raul Jimenez converting to make it 3-2. Despite relentless pressure, Mexico could not find an equalizer.
Bellingham Sets Record in Victory
According to FIFA, at 23 years and six days, Jude Bellingham became the youngest player to make 10 FIFA World Cup appearances, surpassing the previous record held by Argentina's Mario Kempes (23 years, 334 days against Poland in 1978). Bellingham was also named Player of the Match.
England will face Norway in the quarter-finals in Miami on July 11.
Sheinbaum Praises Mexico's Role as Co-Host
The Mexican President also praised the country's role as a World Cup co-host, stating: "To everyone, we showed that Mexico is the world's best host, with a joyful and united people. !!Forever, let's go, Mexico!!"
Mexico controlled possession early but were undone by England's clinical finishing. The hosts pushed for their first World Cup quarter-final appearance in four decades but fell short against a resilient English defense.
