Ronaldo matches Matthaus with 25th World Cup appearance
Cristiano Ronaldo equaled the second-highest number of FIFA World Cup appearances during Portugal's goalless draw against Colombia in their final Group K fixture. The 41-year-old Portugal captain made his 25th appearance in the tournament, drawing level with Germany legend Lothar Matthaus. Only Argentina's Lionel Messi, with 29 appearances, has played more World Cup matches than Ronaldo, according to Opta Analyst.
The veteran forward also extended an unusual statistic, having been flagged offside 11 times across the last two World Cups, four more than any other player in that period. France's Kylian Mbappe and Colombia's Luis Diaz are next with seven offsides each.
Portugal held to goalless draw, both teams advance
Portugal needed a win to finish top of Group K but were frustrated by a disciplined Colombian defense. The 0-0 draw in Miami allowed Colombia, who entered the match with six points, to secure top spot, while Portugal advanced as runners-up with four points.
Colombia nearly snatched a late winner when Davinson Sanchez headed home in the 90th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Earlier, Jhon Cordoba headed over inside the first minute and forced a fine save from Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa. Portugal gradually took control through Bruno Fernandes and Ruben Neves, but Colombia's organized backline limited clear chances. Fernandes came closest for Portugal in the first half, only to be denied by a point-blank save from Camilo Vargas.
Ronaldo remains focal point as Portugal reach knockout stage
Ronaldo, closely marked throughout, remained Portugal's attacking focal point and looked dangerous in the penalty area. Joao Felix and Pedro Neto attempted to stretch Colombia's defense from wide positions. Despite late pressure from both sides, neither found a breakthrough, with Colombia recording the first goalless draw in their World Cup history. The result ensured both nations progressed, with Colombia as group winners and Portugal in second place.
