Sandesh Jhingan backs Portugal and Ronaldo after World Cup draw

Indian footballer Sandesh Jhingan has backed Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal after their underwhelming start to the FIFA World Cup, insisting the team has enough quality to overcome Uzbekistan in a must-win match.

Portugal's disappointing draw

Portugal began their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo, a result that drew criticism. Ronaldo struggled to influence the game, recording only 25 touches, three shots off target, and winning just one duel. It was one of his least involved World Cup performances, with the second-fewest touches in a start for Portugal.

Jhingan's advice to Ronaldo

Speaking to ANI, Jhingan said, "I do not think whether it is justified or not, it does not matter. But does it affect Ronaldo or athletes when they get scrutiny and hate? You have to look beyond it." He added, "Even if he scores three goals against Uzbekistan, critics will still talk. The way I look at it is never let praise affect you, then blame won't either. Stay neutral."

Jhingan emphasized that the dressing room focus is on winning, not individual milestones. "I am pretty sure Ronaldo and the whole dressing room are only thinking of winning. If Cristiano scores, great, but there won't be discussion about him having to score. That is for news and social media. In dressing rooms, it is about winning," he said.

Uzbekistan test ahead

Jhingan, who has played against Uzbekistan, called them a "very good team" coached by Fabio Cannavaro. "That is why they are at the World Cup. It will be a good test for both teams," he concluded. Portugal faces Uzbekistan on Tuesday in a crucial Group B encounter.
