Jannik Sinner breaks Italian record with Wimbledon win over Nuno Borges
Sinner breaks Italian record at Wimbledon, Sabalenka advances

Jannik Sinner made history at Wimbledon on Monday by becoming the first Italian man to reach the quarterfinals at the All England Club. The 10th seed defeated Portugal's Nuno Borges 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in just over two hours on Court 1.

Historic achievement for Italian tennis

Sinner's victory breaks a long-standing drought for Italian men at Wimbledon. No Italian man had reached the quarterfinals in the Open Era, with the previous best being the fourth round achieved by several players, including Nicola Pietrangeli in 1960 and 1964. Sinner, 21, said after the match: "It means a lot to me. I'm really happy to be the first Italian man to do this. I hope I can go even further."

The Italian dominated from the start, breaking Borges' serve early in the first set and maintaining pressure throughout. He won 82% of his first-serve points and faced only one break point, which he saved. Sinner also hit 32 winners to Borges' 18, showcasing his aggressive baseline game.

Sabalenka cruises into quarterfinals

In the women's draw, second seed Aryna Sabalenka continued her impressive form, defeating Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 6-0 in just 67 minutes. Sabalenka, a semifinalist last year, has dropped only 11 games in three matches so far. She said: "I'm feeling great on grass. I'm moving well and serving well. I just need to keep focusing on my game."

Sabalenka will face 25th seed Madison Keys in the quarterfinals. Keys advanced with a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over qualifier Mirra Andreeva. The American saved two match points in the second set tiebreak to force a decider.

Other notable results

In other men's action, sixth seed Holger Rune defeated 32nd seed Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal clash with Sinner. Rune, 20, has reached his second Grand Slam quarterfinal this year after also making the last eight at the French Open.

On the women's side, 2022 champion Elena Rybakina advanced with a 6-1, 6-4 win over 13th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia. Rybakina, seeded third, will face 18-year-old Czech Linda Noskova in the quarterfinals. Noskova defeated 31st seed Barbora Krejcikova 6-2, 6-4.

Impact on the tournament

Sinner's breakthrough adds to the excitement of a wide-open men's draw. With top seed Carlos Alcaraz and defending champion Novak Djokovic still in the tournament, Sinner's quarterfinal against Rune promises to be a clash of two of the sport's brightest young talents. Sabalenka, meanwhile, remains a strong contender for the women's title, with her powerful game well-suited to grass courts.
