AirAsia Orders 150 Airbus A220-300 Jets in $19B Deal

AirAsia has placed a firm order for 150 Airbus A220-300 jets, valued at approximately $19 billion based on list prices. The announcement was made on Thursday at an Airbus facility in Mirabel, Quebec, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in attendance, as reported by the Associated Press.

Strategic Fleet Modernization

The airline stated that this acquisition is a key component of its long-term strategy to modernize its fleet and address rising operational costs, particularly as fuel prices continue to escalate due to global tensions linked to the Iran conflict. AirAsia emphasized that the A220 aircraft offers superior fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions, which will enhance operational efficiency and mitigate the impact of high fuel expenses.

Enhanced Profitability and Market Expansion

With a seating capacity of up to 160 passengers, the A220 can achieve profitability with fewer passengers compared to larger aircraft. This capability enables AirAsia to explore smaller, high-growth markets and secondary hubs that were previously commercially unfeasible. The airline sees this as a strategic move to expand its network across Southeast Asia and the broader Asia-Pacific region.

Executive Insights

Tony Fernandes, co-founder and adviser of AirAsia, who also serves as CEO of Capital A—the majority stakeholder in the airline—highlighted the order's alignment with the group's long-term growth ambitions and cost-reduction focus. "In an environment of high fuel prices and volatility, the answer is not to stand still, it's to double down on efficiency," Fernandes remarked. "This order reflects our long-term discipline and the scale of our ambitions. The A220 is the perfect tool for our next phase of growth."

Order Flexibility and Delivery Timeline

AirAsia has secured an option to increase the order to as many as 300 aircraft, encompassing the wider A220 family and potential future variants. It is common practice for airlines to receive discounts from list prices when purchasing in bulk. Deliveries are scheduled to commence in 2028, with AirAsia planning to deploy the A220s across Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. This will allow the airline to reassign its existing A320 and A321 aircraft to mid-haul routes, while its A330 fleet will focus on longer-haul services to destinations in Europe, Australia, and North America.

Significance for Airbus

This order represents a major milestone for Airbus, pushing total firm orders for the A220 program beyond 1,000 aircraft. As of the end of March 2026, Airbus reported that it had delivered 501 A220 aircraft to 25 carriers globally.
