An anonymous San Francisco resident with a background in technology has made a donation worth $1.6 million to provide every teacher and paraeducator in the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) with a $250 gift card, honoring their contributions to education. The donation, announced by Spark SF Public Schools, the official public foundation of the SFUSD, will benefit approximately 6,000 educators across the district. Recipients will receive the funds through a digital Visa gift card, as confirmed by the foundation.
Donation aimed at recognizing educators
According to Spark SF Public Schools, the donor expressed a desire for educators to feel “seen and appreciated” for their efforts. The foundation emphasized that the contribution is meant to recognize both teachers and paraeducators for their dedication to students. Ginny Fang, President of Spark SF Public Schools, stated, “This generous gift is a heartfelt gesture of appreciation for our educators, whose impact on students and our city is immeasurable.” The donation arrives at a time when schools face staffing, budget, and classroom pressures.
Thousands of educators to benefit
Approximately 6,000 educators from within the district have been selected for the surprise gift. Eligible individuals will receive details via email on how to access the gift card. The foundation has also released a special information page on its website, clarifying that the gift is arranged by an anonymous donor from San Francisco. Some educators initially expressed concerns about the email’s authenticity due to the unusual nature of the gift, but the foundation later confirmed the program’s legitimacy and assisted with distribution.
Comes after recent labor dispute
This donation follows months after labor negotiations between the SFUSD and educators drew public attention. Union officials had requested raises and enhanced healthcare packages during negotiations. The union and district later reached a tentative agreement. Although the donation is not connected to those negotiations and does not affect salaries, its timing has drawn attention.
Teachers' union welcomes gesture
The United Educators of San Francisco (UESF), the district’s teachers’ union, expressed appreciation for the donation. UESF President Cassondra Curiel noted that educators consistently demonstrate dedication and care for their students, often going above and beyond expectations. She described the donation as an important gesture that recognizes educators’ contributions to shaping the lives of San Francisco’s youth.
The donor has chosen to remain anonymous. Reports from the San Francisco Chronicle indicate that the individual approached Spark SF Public Schools months before the announcement, wanting funds to go directly to educators. While this is a one-time gesture, it is significant in both the donation size and the equal distribution among all eligible educators. Amid challenges facing schools today, this donation stands out as a considerable philanthropic effort aimed directly at rewarding educators.
