Bengaluru police have successfully recovered 692 stolen mobile phones worth approximately Rs 17.5 crore during a special operation aimed at curbing mobile theft in the city. The drive, which spanned several weeks, led to the arrest of 14 individuals involved in a well-organized theft network.
Details of the Operation
The special drive was conducted by the Bengaluru City Police, focusing on areas with high rates of mobile theft. The recovered phones include high-end models from various brands, many of which were snatched or stolen from unsuspecting victims. The police used technical surveillance and intelligence gathering to track down the stolen devices.
Arrests and Legal Action
Fourteen suspects were apprehended during the operation, and they are currently in police custody. The accused are believed to be part of a larger syndicate that targeted commuters in crowded areas like bus stops, railway stations, and markets. Cases have been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The police have urged citizens to register complaints immediately after losing their phones and to keep a record of their IMEI numbers, which helped in tracing the devices. They also advised the public to avoid buying second-hand phones from unauthorized sellers to prevent fueling the theft market.
Impact on Crime Rate
This recovery is expected to significantly reduce mobile theft cases in Bengaluru. The police have warned that strict action will be taken against those involved in the illegal trade of stolen phones. The operation is part of a broader initiative to enhance public safety and curb property crimes in the city.
Residents who lost their phones can check with the police to see if their devices are among the recovered ones. The police have set up a helpline for this purpose.
