A Chandigarh man landed in trouble on Sunday after he was arrested for allegedly distributing free liquor-infused ice golas to help people beat the heat. The accused, who owns a liquor shop, was charged with serving an alcoholic beverage to the public without a valid license or permit. He has since been granted bail, as reported by Sandeep Rana.
Excise Department Notice and Social Media Alert
According to a notice issued by the Excise Department on May 25, the administration was alerted to videos circulating on Twitter and Instagram on Saturday. The videos showed a vodka-based drink being mixed with ice golas and served to people outside a liquor vend in Sector 9 Market. The social media posts quickly went viral, prompting the control room to dispatch a flying squad to the location.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Upon arrival, the flying squad observed ice candies containing a dash of alcohol being distributed to the public. The owner failed to produce any permit or license for serving liquor at the site. Following inquiries by police and excise officials, a case was registered under Sections 68, 1, and 14 of the Punjab Excise Act and Section 61(2) of the BNS.
Charanjit Singh Bajaj, whose company was served the excise notice, told TOI on Monday night, 'We do not know any Rajesh Bajaj (the one named in the showcause). No one works here by this name. We organized no such langar or served any liquor in gola. A customer outside our shop may have done something; we cannot say anything about that.'
