ChatGPT-maker OpenAI introduced Codex desktop application in February this year. The company has now announced that its AI coding assistant, Codex, is available on mobile via the ChatGPT app. This enables developers to manage and approve coding tasks directly from their phones. The rollout, currently in preview for iOS and Android, expands Codex's reach beyond desktops and remote environments.
"Codex is now in the ChatGPT mobile app so you can stay in the loop from anywhere. More than 4 million people now use Codex every week, and we're seeing how much those small moments matter. A quick check-in can keep a thread moving, prevent unnecessary rework, or help Codex make progress with the right context. Now you can do that from your phone," said OpenAI.
Codex While on the Go
With Codex on mobile, developers can now connect to laptops, devboxes, or managed remote environments and access live states from those machines. Updates such as screenshots, terminal output, diffs, and test results are streamed to mobile devices, enabling quick approvals or corrections even when away from a workstation. Under the hood, Codex uses a secure relay layer that keeps trusted machines reachable across devices without exposing them directly to the public internet. That relay also keeps active session state and context synced anywhere you're signed in with ChatGPT.
Real-Time Collaboration
Codex is designed for long-running tasks where timely human input is critical. From mobile, users can:
- Investigate bugs while away from their desk.
- Review refactor options mid-commute.
- Prepare customer briefings by synthesizing updates across Slack, email, and documents.
- Capture new ideas on the go and turn them into active threads.
Enterprise Features
OpenAI has also introduced enterprise-grade capabilities:
- Remote SSH access into managed environments.
- Hooks for scanning prompts, logging conversations, and customizing Codex behavior.
- Scoped programmatic access tokens for CI pipelines and release workflows.
- HIPAA compliance for ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces, enabling healthcare use cases.
Availability
Codex mobile is rolling out in preview across Free and Go plans, with enterprise features available for Business and Enterprise tiers. It integrates with the Codex desktop app on macOS, with Windows support coming soon.
