Kochi: The N R Madhava Menon Interdisciplinary Centre for Research Ethics and Protocols at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) has entered into a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Kerala High Court. This agreement aims to provide internship opportunities to students enrolled in the integrated BSc LLB (Hons) Computer Science programme at the university.
Programme Details
The BSc LLB (Hons) Computer Science programme, which has received approval from the Bar Council of India, uniquely combines legal education with computer science. The curriculum is designed to equip students with expertise in emerging areas at the intersection of law and technology, preparing them for careers that require a deep understanding of both fields.
Objectives of the MoU
According to a senior official from the university, the MoU seeks to strengthen experiential learning and foster academic collaboration between the judiciary and legal educational institutions. The internship initiative is described as the first such collaboration of its kind in India.
Under the terms of the agreement, the Kerala High Court will offer internship opportunities to students enrolled in the programme. This will enable them to gain practical exposure to various aspects of the judicial system, including judicial procedures, data confidentiality, legal documentation, and the use of digital technologies in judicial processes. The internships are intended to provide hands-on experience that complements the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom.
The collaboration is expected to benefit both students and the judiciary. Students will have the opportunity to work in a real-world legal environment, while the High Court will gain access to students with a strong foundation in both law and computer science, potentially contributing to the modernization of judicial processes.
This initiative underscores the growing importance of interdisciplinary education in addressing the challenges posed by the rapid advancement of technology in the legal field. It also highlights the commitment of Cusat and the Kerala High Court to fostering innovation in legal education and practice.
