The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the customs department at Trichy International Airport thwarted a gold smuggling attempt on Thursday. Officials intercepted a woman passenger who arrived on an IndiGo flight in the morning.
Gold Hidden in Saree Knot
During inspection, officers recovered six pieces of 24-karat gold weighing 155 grams. The gold, in fragmented chain form, had been concealed inside the knot of the woman’s saree. Officials seized the contraband and launched further investigation.
Second Major Seizure This Month
This is the second major gold seizure at Trichy airport this month. Earlier, the customs AIU team recovered six abandoned gold bars weighing 600 grams from the lavatory of an aircraft that arrived from Singapore.
