Pune: Cybercrooks posing as officials from the Bima Lokpal office in New Delhi allegedly cheated a 51-year-old resident of Rupeenagar in Talawade of Rs 30.25 lakh by promising him a term insurance policy worth Rs 60 crore.
The fraud took place between December 2024 and April this year. A case was registered with the Chikhali police on Tuesday following a preliminary investigation into the online complaint.
According to police, the complainant, who works with a private company, received a call on December 5, 2024, from an unknown number. “The caller claimed to be an official from the Bima Lokpal office and offered him a Rs 60 crore term insurance policy, sharing purported policy details,” an officer from Chikhali police said.
The caller assured the complainant that he would receive immediate financial assistance of at least Rs 3 lakh in case of hospitalisation and that all his family members would be covered under the policy.
The fraudster subsequently collected money from the complainant under various pretexts.
“The complainant transferred around Rs 30 lakh to different bank accounts between December 2024 and April 2025 and lost all the money,” the officer added.
