Kolhapur: Prathamesh Sachin Gaikwad, a diabetic student dependent on insulin injections, considered leaving education after Std X. However, teachers at Yashodhara Junior College in Solapur persuaded him to continue, instilling confidence in a brighter future. Prathamesh, who lost both parents in childhood and was raised by his grandmother and aunt, scored 71% in the Std XII board exam results declared on Saturday.
Overcoming Health Challenges
Prathamesh had initially scored 58% in Std X and planned to quit. But with proper diabetes management over two years, he persisted. He stated, "I want to pursue higher education, earn a degree, and enter public service." Pankaj Sutkar, director of the education society, noted that Prathamesh used to faint and experience hand tremors due to stress from his diabetic condition. With full support and proper management, he became the best student for both years of junior college and excelled in sports. His story has inspired many in the neighborhood to continue education despite odds.
Blind Students Leverage AI Tools
Five totally blind students from Andh Yuvak Manch's residential facility in Hanbarwadi, Kolhapur district, used artificial intelligence tools to clear the HSC exam. They listened to textbook content and took practice tests using AI, writing papers with the aid of scribes. Divya Tanaji Bhosale scored 52%, Salim Mujawar 49%, Modin Sheikh 48%, Daji Sawant 58%, and Rehan Bagwan 48% in the arts faculty. These homeless students have parents who are either deceased or financially unable to support their education.
Special teacher Ajay Vankudre, who is also blind, explained, "We used AI tools like 'TalkBack' which generate audio from text or lectures. We also ensured they attended routine lectures at Gokhale College or KMC College to learn in a natural setting."
