In a major drug bust, four passengers were arrested at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport for allegedly attempting to smuggle hydroponic ganja worth over Rs 215 crore. The seizure was carried out by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Tuesday.
Details of the Seizure
The DRI officials intercepted the four passengers who were about to board a flight to a foreign destination. Upon searching their luggage, they discovered a large quantity of hydroponic ganja, a high-grade cannabis cultivated using hydroponic methods. The total value of the seized drugs is estimated to be more than Rs 215 crore in the international market.
Modus Operandi
The contraband was carefully concealed among personal belongings and packed in vacuum-sealed bags to avoid detection. The passengers, whose identities have not been disclosed, are believed to be part of a larger drug trafficking network. Investigations are ongoing to trace the source of the drugs and identify other individuals involved in the operation.
Legal Action
The four accused have been taken into custody and booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. They will be produced before a local court, which will decide on their judicial custody. The DRI is also probing whether the passengers had made any previous attempts to smuggle drugs.
Modus Operandi
Hydroponic ganja is known for its high potency and is often grown in controlled environments without soil. The drug is popular among users seeking a stronger effect, and its production involves sophisticated techniques. The seizure is considered a significant blow to the illegal drug trade in the region.
Previous Incidents
This is not the first case of drug smuggling at Bengaluru airport. In recent years, authorities have intercepted several attempts to smuggle narcotics, including cocaine, heroin, and cannabis. The DRI and other agencies have stepped up surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts to curb such activities.
The arrest of the four passengers highlights the ongoing challenge of drug trafficking through Indian airports. Authorities remain vigilant and are working to dismantle networks that exploit air travel for illegal purposes.
