Google Drive Smarter Scanner: Multi-Page Scanning and Duplicate Detection
Google Drive Scanner Gets Multi-Page and Duplicate Detection

Google has announced a significant update to its document scanning feature within Google Drive, introducing multi-page scanning and duplicate detection capabilities. The new features aim to streamline the digitization process for users, making it more efficient and intelligent.

Multi-Page Scanning Made Easy

The updated scanner allows users to capture multiple pages in a single scan session. Instead of scanning each page individually and then combining them, users can now continuously add pages to a single document. This is particularly useful for scanning multi-page contracts, receipts, or notes. The feature automatically detects page boundaries and adjusts the crop, ensuring each page is captured cleanly.

How Multi-Page Scanning Works

To use multi-page scanning, open the Google Drive app on your Android or iOS device, tap the '+' icon, and select 'Scan'. After capturing the first page, a new button appears to add more pages. You can continue scanning until all pages are captured. Once done, you can reorder, rotate, or delete pages before saving the document as a PDF.

Duplicate Detection to Save Storage

Another smart addition is duplicate detection. When scanning a document, Google Drive will compare the scanned image with existing files in your Drive. If a duplicate is detected, the app will alert you, allowing you to avoid saving redundant copies. This helps in managing storage space and keeping your Drive organized.

Additional Improvements

The update also includes enhanced image processing, such as automatic edge detection and perspective correction, which improves the quality of scanned documents. The scanner now supports higher resolution captures and better text recognition for OCR (Optical Character Recognition) purposes.

Google has rolled out these features gradually to all users on both Android and iOS platforms. The update is available for free as part of the Google Drive app, with no additional subscription required. Users are encouraged to update their app to the latest version to access the new functionalities.

This update positions Google Drive as a more robust tool for document management, competing directly with dedicated scanning apps like Adobe Scan and Microsoft Lens. With these additions, Google aims to enhance productivity for both personal and professional users.
