A second-year BTech student at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Nagpur, died after allegedly falling from the ninth floor of the hostel building on campus early Monday morning. Police suspect the student died by suicide and have ruled out foul play.
The deceased, Shreyas Mane, was a 4th-semester student in the Human Computer Interaction & Gaming Technology course and hailed from Kolhapur. According to preliminary information, the incident came to light around 7 am when the student was found critically injured near the hostel. The building from which he reportedly jumped has 11 floors. Fellow students and campus authorities rushed to his aid and alerted emergency services, but he could not be saved.
Police Investigation and Initial Findings
A case of accidental death was registered at Butibori police station. Police ruled out the possibility of ragging behind the incident. Investigators are examining the circumstances leading up to the incident, including the student's recent activities and mental state.
Possible Triggers: Academic Backlogs and Exams
College authorities stated that the student had academic backlogs and was not attending classes regularly. They added that examinations were scheduled to begin on Monday, which could have been a possible trigger. 'We are cooperating fully with the police in the investigation,' an official said.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the campus, with students and faculty expressing grief. The institute has assured full support to the family and is working with authorities to understand the factors that led to this tragedy.
