Lucknow Metro commuters have expressed growing frustration over the unavailability of smart card services at multiple stations across the city. For the past month, passengers report that smart cards have not been consistently available, forcing many to rely on token-based travel, which is less convenient and time-saving.
Commuters Demand Smart Cards
Regular metro users have made repeated requests for the issuance of rechargeable smart cards, but these appeals have largely gone unanswered. This has led to increased inconvenience, particularly during peak hours when queues for tokens become longer and more time-consuming. Commuters emphasize that smart cards offer ease of use and faster entry, making their absence a significant issue.
UPMRC Responds to Concerns
Officials from the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) have clarified that the current shortage is not due to a lack of supply but rather a strategic decision. The corporation is not actively promoting smart cards because of the upcoming launch of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC). However, they assured that smart cards are still available on demand at select major stations, including Hazratganj and Charbagh.
NCMC Launch Imminent
UPMRC further stated that the NCMC system is expected to be introduced within the next 15 days. This new card aims to provide a more integrated and convenient travel experience across multiple modes of transport, potentially replacing the current smart card system altogether. Commuters are advised to use tokens temporarily until the NCMC is fully operational.
