In a significant upgrade aimed at simplifying urban commuting, homegrown digital mapping leader MapmyIndia has rolled out a comprehensive public transport feature on its flagship Mappls application. This new functionality empowers users to seamlessly plan journeys using metro, rail, and bus networks directly within the app.
What the New Feature Offers Commuters
The Delhi-based company announced the launch on Tuesday, December 30, 2025. The feature provides detailed views of public transport routes across multiple modes. Users can access crucial information including station and stop locations, as well as interchange options between different transport systems. This integrated data is designed to help millions of Indians plan more efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable daily commutes.
MapmyIndia stated that the Mappls app currently boasts a user base of more than 40 million (four crore) people. The public transport feature, however, is being introduced in a phased manner. Initially, it is available for iOS and web app users in 18 select Indian cities.
The initial rollout covers major metropolitan hubs and state capitals, including:
- Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata
- Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Chandigarh
- Patna, Bhopal, Indore, Nagpur, Kanpur, Agra, Kochi
The company has confirmed plans to extend the feature to Android users and expand its geographical coverage to more cities in the near future.
Riding the Wave of 'Swadeshi' Tech Adoption
The launch comes at a time when Indian digital products are witnessing renewed interest, partly fueled by the central government's push for 'Swadeshi' or Made-in-India alternatives. MapmyIndia, positioned as a local counterpart to global giants like Google Maps, experienced a notable surge in popularity in October 2025 alongside other homegrown platforms such as Zoho's Arattai and Zoho Mail.
Rakesh Verma, Co-Founder, Chairman & Managing Director of MapmyIndia Mappls, emphasized user feedback as the driver behind this launch. "The launch of multimodal public transport routes on the Mappls App is a direct outcome of listening to our users," Verma said. He added that the goal is to make the app more inclusive and accessible for every citizen, with a commitment to expanding coverage to make public transport more convenient for millions.
Deepening Government Partnerships and Strategic Alliances
MapmyIndia's roots in the government and enterprise sector run deep. The company highlighted that its geospatial technology forms the backbone of the IT Ministry's UMANG app, which helps citizens locate nearby government facilities. The firm has often underscored that its platform is better suited for official use due to its careful handling of sensitive data, such as international border delineation.
Government business now contributes a substantial 20% to the company's gross revenue, reflecting exponential growth in this segment over recent years. This synergy was further evidenced during the winter session of Parliament, where MeitY informed the Lok Sabha about migrating lakhs of official email accounts to Zoho Mail, another prominent Indian tech provider.
Beyond the new transit feature, Mappls continues to offer its core suite of services, including turn-by-turn navigation, real-time traffic updates, safety alerts, and intelligent routing. In a strategic move in November 2025, MapmyIndia also partnered with Zoho Corp to integrate its address-capturing and lead-discovery tools directly into Zoho's popular CRM software, strengthening its enterprise offerings.
This public transport launch marks a pivotal step for MapmyIndia as it evolves from a pure-play navigation tool into a comprehensive mobility platform, directly addressing the complex commuting needs of India's urban population while championing homegrown technological innovation.
