A woman from Gandhinagar has filed a complaint against a man she connected with on a matrimonial website, accusing him of hiding his true identity, deceiving her into a relationship under the pretense of marriage, and subsequently blackmailing her using private photographs and videos. The case was registered at the Women’s Police Station (West) and marks the second similar complaint against the same individual within three days.
Background of the Case
According to police reports, the complainant operates a juice center in Gandhinagar and resides with her son. After separating from her husband several years ago, she created a profile on a matrimonial platform in 2023. In July of that year, she received a request from a man calling himself “Aditya Patel.”
The first information report (FIR) states that during their interactions, the man claimed to be a widower living in Ahmedabad and running a manufacturing business in Chhatral. They maintained contact via phone calls and WhatsApp messages and met several times in Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad. The woman alleged that he repeatedly assured her of marriage despite potential family opposition, leading her to trust him and enter into a relationship.
Discovery of Deception
The complainant told police that she grew suspicious after noticing documents with different names. When confronted, the man allegedly claimed the documents belonged to an employee and shared copies of Aadhaar, PAN, driving license, passport, and other papers identifying him as “Aditya Patel.” However, her doubts resurfaced after she traced a phone number saved on his mobile and visited a residence in Kadi. There, she discovered that the man was allegedly Karim Sipai, not Aditya Patel as he had represented.
Blackmail and Harassment
The woman alleged that she subsequently cut ties with him. Following this, the accused began demanding money and threatening to circulate their photographs and intimate video clips if she revealed his true identity. Fearing social stigma, she allegedly paid him around Rs 15,000 over time. She further alleged that the accused continued contacting her using multiple phone numbers and created fake social media profiles resembling her accounts to send objectionable messages to people she knew.
Legal Action
The complainant told police she decided to approach authorities after learning through media reports that similar allegations had been made against the accused by another woman. Police have registered a case of cheating, criminal intimidation, impersonation, and cyber harassment, and have launched an investigation.
