Nagpur: Students from the 2024-25 batch across several courses are allegedly facing delays in receiving their original final-year mark sheets and degree certificates from Nagpur University, despite the convocation having been held months ago. Now, many students stare at academic losses as they seek admission to higher institutions in other states and abroad. The university's 113th Convocation was held in January this year to award degrees to students who cleared the Winter 2024 and Summer 2025 examinations. Degrees for the 2023-24 batch were distributed to colleges around two months after the previous convocation.
Repeated Visits to Examination Section
Students claimed they are being forced to make repeated visits to the university's examination section. Tania (name changed), who spent nearly an entire day at the exam section seeking her original final-year mark sheets and degree certificate, said this was not her first visit in the past year. She was eventually issued the original mark sheets for BA (Mass Communication) fifth and sixth semesters, but only after a prolonged delay.
“My fifth-semester result was declared in Dec 2024 and sixth-semester result in May 2025. I arrived around 11am on Tuesday and was told the documents would be issued within a few minutes. After waiting for nearly five hours and breaking down emotionally, the process was expedited, and I got my mark sheets,” she said. However, her degree certificate remains pending.
“I have secured admission to a reputed institution in South India for postgraduate studies. I have received a scholarship and need the original degree certificate. I must join and submit original documents on June 28. My mother is a cancer patient, and I have no one else to follow up with the university once I leave Nagpur. After I refused to leave, exam officials assured me that my degree would be issued soon,” she said.
Waiting for Six Months
Another student, Tanmay (name changed), said he too has been waiting for his degree certificate for nearly six months. Despite repeated follow-ups, there has been no clear communication on when the pending degrees will be issued, claimed Tanmay. “I need to apply to a Mumbai college for a postgraduate law course. They have asked for my original degree certificate. When I approached my college, I was told to check with the university's examination section. I have been running from one desk to another without any luck,” he said.
College Officials Speak Out
Speaking to TOI, a couple of principals and directors of affiliated colleges said they have received numerous applications from students seeking degree certificates. “In some urgent cases, degrees are issued without delay. But in most cases, students end up waiting for more than a year,” a principal said.
A college clerk said he refused to collect degrees from the previous convocation after the examination section allegedly asked him to sign the verification section on the reverse side of the certificates. “It is the duty of the university's examination section. Clerks are not authorised to sign anywhere on a degree certificate,” he said.
University Response
Vice-chancellor Manali Kshirsagar did not respond to TOI's calls. University examination officials said the system is already strained due to ongoing examination work and staff shortages. “The examination section's shifting work has also slowed the process. Conducting the summer examinations is our priority. We cannot allow that process to derail,” a senior official said, without specifying a timeline for clearing the backlog of pending degrees.
