Early Thursday morning, six coaches of the driverless train arrived at the Baiyappanahalli depot from BEML's Thippasandra plant in the city. The arrival marks a significant milestone for the Namma Metro's Blue Line, which will connect K.R. Pura to Silk Board via the airport.
Train Details and Specifications
The six-coach train set is part of a larger order of 36 trainsets, each with six coaches, from BEML. These trains are designed to be driverless, operating under the Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system, which ensures automated and efficient operations.
Current Status of Tracks and Infrastructure
Despite the arrival of the train, trial runs are still months away as the tracks are not yet ready. The civil construction work on the Blue Line is ongoing, with several sections still under development. The line is expected to be operational by late 2026 or early 2027.
Significance for Bengaluru
The Blue Line is one of the most anticipated metro corridors in Bengaluru, as it will provide a direct link from the city center to Kempegowda International Airport. This will significantly reduce travel time and congestion on the roads.
The train's arrival has generated excitement among commuters, but officials caution that the timeline for trial runs depends on track completion. Once ready, the driverless trains will undergo rigorous testing before passenger services begin.
