NEET-UG 2027 to Be Held in CBT Mode Over 6 Days at 1,000+ Centres
NEET-UG 2027 CBT Mode Over 6 Days at 1,000+ Centres

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced that the NEET-UG 2027 examination will be conducted in computer-based test (CBT) mode over six days at more than 1,000 centres across India. This marks a major shift from the traditional pen-and-paper format that has been used for the medical entrance exam.

Long-Awaited Transition to CBT

The idea of switching to CBT mode for NEET has been deliberated several times in the past. According to NTA officials, the decision was finalized after extensive consultations with stakeholders, including medical colleges, students, and technology experts. The move aims to streamline the examination process, reduce logistical challenges, and enhance security.

"The transition to CBT mode will bring NEET-UG in line with other major entrance exams like JEE Main, which has been successfully conducted in computer-based format for years," said an NTA spokesperson. The exam will be held in multiple shifts across the six days to accommodate the large number of applicants.

Key Features of the New Format

Under the new plan, NEET-UG 2027 will be conducted at over 1,000 centres, a significant increase from the current 500-600 centres. This expansion is intended to provide greater accessibility to candidates from rural and remote areas. Each centre will be equipped with the necessary computer infrastructure, including backup systems to prevent disruptions.

The CBT format will feature randomized question papers for each candidate, reducing the risk of cheating. The NTA has also promised a user-friendly interface with features like a virtual calculator and on-screen timer. The exam duration will remain the same as the current format—three hours—with 180 multiple-choice questions from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

Impact on Students and Preparations

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among students. Many welcome the move, citing the convenience of computerized testing. "I have been preparing for CBT since JEE Main, so this change is welcome," said Ananya Sharma, a Class 12 student from Delhi. However, some students expressed concerns about digital literacy and access to practice resources.

To address these concerns, the NTA plans to release a CBT practice platform by early 2026, allowing candidates to familiarize themselves with the interface. Additionally, free mock tests will be provided at designated centres in rural areas. The agency has assured that the transition will be smooth, with adequate support for all candidates.

Historical Context and Future Implications

The shift to CBT has been under consideration since 2022, when a committee recommended it to improve efficiency. The 2027 NEET-UG will be the first to implement this format. The NTA expects the new system to reduce errors in answer sheet processing and speed up result declaration. Results, which previously took up to six weeks, are expected to be announced within two weeks.

With over 2.5 million candidates expected to appear for NEET-UG 2027, the CBT mode will also help in better management of exam logistics, including question paper distribution and security. The NTA has stated that the move will eventually lead to cost savings, though the initial investment in infrastructure is significant.
