Pune: A team of Pimpri Chinchwad cyber police successfully recovered Rs 56 lakh after a Bhosari-based valve manufacturing company fell victim to an email spoofing fraud on April 6. The cybercriminals had hacked the email account of a China-based firm, which was a vendor for the duped company.
The fraudsters created a new email address and shared fake bank account details, claiming these were the new accounts of the Chinese vendor. They then requested a payment of Rs 56 lakh from the Bhosari firm into those accounts. The company officials transferred the amount without verification. When they later contacted the Chinese company to confirm, they realized the fraud and immediately approached the cyber police.
Senior Police Inspector Ravikiran Nale of the Pimpri Chinchwad cyber police and his team traced the money to a bank account in the United States. They contacted the nodal officer of the receiving bank and alerted them about the fraudulent transaction. The police team not only managed to freeze the amount but also ensured it was transferred back to the complainant's account, the officer said.
