This update, which became available to all users on April 16, introduces significant enhancements to usability and interface dynamics.

Enhanced Orientation Handling and Parallel Browsing

The most notable change in the redesigned app is its sophisticated handling of device orientation. Unlike previous versions that merely resized content when flipping a tablet, the new interface fully reconfigures between portrait and landscape modes. This means layouts shift intelligently rather than just scaling, providing a more seamless user experience.

A key feature of this redesign is the introduction of parallel browsing, which Spotify describes as a collapsible sidebar that sits alongside playback controls. This allows users to scroll through recommendations or their personal library without interrupting the music or podcast that's currently playing. This functionality addresses a common pain point for tablet users who previously had to navigate away from their playback to explore new content.

Spotify has also relocated the "Switch to Video" toggle to a more accessible position within the interface, making it easier for users to transition into a more immersive viewing experience when consuming video content. Despite these changes, the app maintains familiar navigation elements, with the bottom navigation bar—featuring Home, Search, Your Library, and Create—remaining in place. This ensures that users already accustomed to the phone app can transition smoothly to the tablet version.

Broad Device Compatibility Including Foldables

The redesign, which had been in testing with select users earlier this year, is now officially available for all iPad and Android tablet users. Notably, on Android devices, the app also supports select foldable smartphones. Compatibility has been confirmed on devices including the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Honor Magic V6, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, though it does not currently work on the Oppo Find N6. This limitation appears to be related to aspect ratio or screen density considerations rather than any deliberate exclusion by Spotify.

Design Philosophy and User Experience Goals

Nicole Burrow, Spotify's head of design for consumer experience, explained the company's approach: "From TV to desktop to the car, we've been designing Spotify to feel native to each screen—and now we're bringing that same experience to tablets. Tablets give you more room to explore, so we designed it to let you browse and discover new favorites alongside what's already playing. The goal was simple: Wherever you open Spotify, it should feel unmistakably like Spotify."

This statement underscores Spotify's commitment to creating consistent yet optimized experiences across all platforms, recognizing that tablets offer unique opportunities for content discovery due to their larger display areas.
