TNEA to Proceed as Scheduled Despite NEET Re-exam, 2.2 Lakh Applications Received
TNEA Proceeds Despite NEET Re-exam, 2.2 Lakh Applications

Chennai: With over two lakh students vying for engineering seats this year, the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) committee is proceeding as per its original schedule, unaffected by the NEET re-examination. The National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the NEET-UG exam conducted on May 3 due to a question paper leak and has scheduled the re-exam for June 21. This development is expected to delay admissions to medical and other professional courses across the country.

TNEA Applications and Schedule

As the deadline approaches, TNEA has received approximately 2.2 lakh applications, matching last year's numbers. The engineering rank list will be released as planned on June 29. Counselling is also expected to follow the previous year's timeline, as the NEET re-exam results are anticipated before the counselling begins. The last date to apply for engineering counselling is June 2.

Last year, engineering counselling for special categories started on July 7, and general counselling was conducted from July 14 to August 19.

Additional Seats to Prevent Vacancies

To avoid vacancies after medical counselling, the state government has allowed Anna University to fill 15% more seats than last year. A TNEA official stated, "With these additional seats, the chances of seats going vacant in top government colleges are less."

Expert Insights on Student Choices

Career consultant Jayaprakash Gandhi noted that more students from Tamil Nadu have applied for CBSE Class XII revaluation, as they received lower-than-expected scores in physics and mathematics. "Both state board and CBSE students will have their marks changed after revaluation this year. Holding engineering counselling after the release of the medical rank list will help students make informed decisions about which stream to join," he explained. He further added, "We expect more toppers to opt for core engineering branches this year due to increased opportunities. Mechanical, electrical, and electronics engineering courses are likely to be more popular."

In recent years, computer science and information technology have remained the most preferred courses, along with artificial intelligence and data science. Last year, many students also chose electronics and communication courses.
