Truecaller CEO: 5.25 lakh flag calls from 1600, 140 series daily

Truecaller CEO Alan Mamedi has disclosed that approximately 525,000 people flag calls originating from the 1600 and 140 number series as spam every day. The revelation comes amid ongoing debates about the effectiveness of spam call filtering and the role of telecom regulatory frameworks in India.

Spam Flagging Data Highlights Scale of Problem

According to Mamedi, the daily volume of flagged calls underscores the persistent nuisance of unsolicited commercial communications. The 140 series numbers are typically used for promotional and telemarketing calls, while the 1600 series is associated with service numbers. The CEO emphasized that Truecaller's community-based spam reporting mechanism provides real-time data on user experiences.

However, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has clarified that promotional calls made from the 140 number series cannot be tagged or filtered by third-party applications like Truecaller. Instead, such calls can only be blocked through the official Do Not Disturb (DND) registry maintained by telecom operators.

Regulatory Limitations and User Options

Trai's stance means that even if users report 140 series calls as spam on Truecaller, the app cannot automatically filter or block them. The only recourse for consumers is to register their numbers on the DND list, which legally prohibits telemarketers from contacting them. Failure to comply by telemarketers can result in penalties imposed by the telecom department.

Mamedi noted that while Truecaller's tagging system helps identify spam patterns, the ultimate solution lies in stricter enforcement of DND regulations and carrier-level blocking. He stated, "Our data shows that users are frustrated with these calls, but we are limited by the regulatory framework. We encourage users to activate DND for comprehensive protection."

Industry Response and Future Measures

The telecom industry has been exploring technological solutions, including the use of artificial intelligence to detect spam call patterns. Trai has also proposed stricter norms for telemarketers, including mandatory registration of all promotional numbers and real-time monitoring of call volumes.

As of July 2026, the issue remains a significant concern for Indian mobile users, with an estimated one million spam calls made daily from 140 series numbers alone. Truecaller's data serves as a barometer of public sentiment, highlighting the need for coordinated action between regulators, telecom operators, and app developers.
