Microsoft has alerted Windows 11 users about a significant interface problem affecting their systems. The technology company confirmed that recent updates to Windows 11 are causing the password sign-in option to vanish from lock screens, creating confusion for users trying to access their devices.
What Exactly Is Happening with Windows 11?
The software giant identified that the password icon disappears from the lock screen even when users have multiple sign-in methods enabled. Under normal circumstances, Windows 11 displays the password icon only when alternative sign-in options like PIN or fingerprint recognition are available. If a user relies solely on password authentication, the system typically shows the password field directly without requiring icon selection.
This technical glitch specifically impacts users who installed the August 2025 KB5064081 non-security preview update or subsequent versions on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 systems. Microsoft has been transparent about the issue, acknowledging the visual bug while reassuring users that the underlying functionality remains intact.
Microsoft's Temporary Solution and Workaround
Despite the missing icon, Microsoft confirmed that the password feature continues to work properly. Users can still access their password option through a simple mouse maneuver. The company detailed the workaround in its official support documentation, explaining that hovering the mouse cursor over the area where the password button should appear will make the functional button visible.
Microsoft's support team elaborated: "If you hover over the space where the icon should appear, you'll see that the password button is still available. Select this placeholder to open the password text box and enter your password. After entering your password, you can sign in normally."
The technology giant has not yet provided a permanent fix for this visual bug. While the company acknowledges it's working on resolving the issue, there's no official timeline for when a complete solution will be deployed. Currently, the hidden button feature remains the only reliable workaround for affected users.
History of Recent Windows Update Problems
This password icon issue isn't the first problem stemming from recent Windows updates. In September, Microsoft addressed another complication caused by the optional KB5064081 update that affected media playback. That previous issue caused DRM-protected videos to freeze, stop playing, or display black screens in Blu-ray, DVD, and digital television applications.

August's Patch Tuesday updates introduced further complications that required Microsoft's intervention. Security updates distributed through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) were failing with error code 0x80240069. The company had to release emergency updates to repair broken reset and recovery features in Windows 10 and Windows 10 Enterprise versions.
