X (Formerly Twitter) Hit by Widespread Global Outage, Disrupting Users in India and US
X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, has been struck by a significant global outage, causing widespread disruption for thousands of users across the world. The massive downtime occurred on Wednesday, March 18, rendering the service inaccessible and preventing users in key regions like India and the United States from viewing posts, photos, and videos.
Performance Monitoring Reports Spike in User Complaints
According to data from the performance monitoring service Downdetector.com, a substantial portion of the user base reported issues with both the X app and website. Many users attributed the problems to server failures, while others experienced difficulties with the platform's core functionalities. The outage began surfacing around 8:00 PM, with complaints peaking at approximately 8:30 PM.
At the time of reporting, incident reports on Downdetector had exceeded 15,000 globally. Notably, roughly 4,600 of these reports originated from India, highlighting the significant impact in this region. Members of The Times of India tech team confirmed the issues, stating they were unable to load new posts on both the website and app. Users encountered various errors, including being shown hours-old content, getting stuck on a 'black page,' or receiving messages such as "Something went wrong. Try reloading."
Breakdown of User Issues in India
In India, the outage affected users disproportionately. Data from Downdetector indicates that 52% of global users reported problems specifically with accessing the X app. Additionally, 38% of affected users struggled with website access, while approximately 10% cited server connection failures and issues related to their feed or timeline.
X has not released any public statement regarding the cause of this outage. This incident marks the latest in a series of technical faults for the platform, following similar widespread disruptions on January 13, in November of the previous year, an October outage linked to Cloudflare, and additional issues in July and August that previously prevented thousands from using the service.
Historical Context of Recent Outages
The outage on March 18 adds to a growing list of technical challenges faced by X. Earlier this year, on January 16, the platform experienced another significant disruption. These recurring issues have raised concerns about the stability and reliability of the social media service, especially as it continues to evolve under its rebranded identity.
Users worldwide have expressed frustration over the frequent downtime, which disrupts communication, news dissemination, and social interactions. The lack of immediate official communication from X during such events often leaves users in the dark, exacerbating the inconvenience.
As the platform works to address these technical faults, the global user community remains vigilant, hoping for more robust infrastructure and timely updates to prevent future outages of this scale.
