Ahmedabad Students Pioneer AI-Powered Skin Health App Derma Vision

In a remarkable fusion of technology and healthcare, students from Zebar School for Children in Ahmedabad have developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based application named Derma Vision. This innovative tool is designed to promote skin health awareness, showcasing how cutting-edge technology can bolster both educational initiatives and preventive healthcare measures.

Community Impact and Screening Initiative

The real-world efficacy of Derma Vision was recently demonstrated during a community screening event organized as part of a Women's Day awareness programme. Over 450 women, including teachers, administrative staff, and ground personnel from Udgamverse schools in Ahmedabad, voluntarily participated in AI-based skin scanning using the application.

The screening results were eye-opening: approximately 50 participants exhibited visible skin patterns that necessitated professional dermatological consultation. This outcome underscores the critical importance of early awareness and timely medical advice in managing skin health.

Development and Technology Behind Derma Vision

Derma Vision was crafted by a talented team of students from Classes 7 and 8: Dishen Gadhiya, Hetansh Patel, Yug Dalsania, and Janmesh Darji. The application leverages advanced computer vision technology to analyze visible skin patterns, presenting findings in simple, accessible language.

Beyond analysis, the app provides users with:

  • Basic skincare tips tailored to individual needs
  • Preventive measures to maintain healthy skin
  • Home remedies for minor issues
  • Recommendations for dermatologist visits only when essential, avoiding unnecessary alarms

National Recognition and Future Plans

The innovation has already garnered significant acclaim, securing the Best Innovative Idea in Artificial Intelligence award at the Vigyantram National Championship 2026, hosted at IIT Delhi. In this prestigious competition, Derma Vision triumphed over entries from 49 schools across India, highlighting its potential and creativity.

Motivated by these achievements and the positive community feedback, the students are now embarking on an ambitious next phase. They plan to collaborate with dermatologists to further validate the application's accuracy and enhance its clinical and ethical safeguards. This step aims to ensure the tool is both reliable and responsible for broader use.

This project exemplifies how youthful ingenuity, when combined with technological advancements, can address real-world health challenges, fostering a culture of prevention and education in society.
