AIIMS Bhopal Introduces AI-Powered Navigation System in Partnership with IIT Indore
Navigating the extensive and often confusing campus of AIIMS Bhopal is poised to become much simpler for patients and visitors, thanks to the launch of a new smart, AI-enabled navigation system. This innovative initiative, developed in collaboration with IIT Indore, aims to streamline movement across the hospital and academic complex, addressing long-standing complaints about the difficulty of finding one's way around the sprawling facility.
How the AI Navigation System Works
The system is designed as a web- and mobile app-based platform to provide precise guidance. Key entry points and prominent locations across the campus will be equipped with QR codes. When scanned using a smartphone, these QR codes will open an interactive map that offers step-by-step directions from the user's current location to their desired destination, such as a specific department, ward, or office.
For navigation between buildings, the system utilizes GPS technology. However, to overcome the limitations of GPS accuracy indoors, relay devices will be installed approximately every 15 meters. This ensures that users receive accurate and reliable guidance even inside the hospital's many buildings, which often have similar layouts that can be confusing to navigate.
Pilot Project and Expected Benefits
The project will initially be implemented as a one-month pilot to evaluate its usability and effectiveness. If successful, it will be expanded to cover the entire AIIMS Bhopal campus. Officials highlight that this initiative is expected to bring multiple benefits, including saving time for patients, reducing the reliance on hospital staff for directions, and alleviating anxiety among visitors who are unfamiliar with the large and complex hospital environment.
A dedicated mobile application will also be available for users who require continuous assistance throughout their visit. This app-based approach ensures that help is readily accessible, enhancing the overall patient and visitor experience.
