Alibaba Establishes AI Task Force Following Senior Executive Departures
Alibaba Group Holding Ltd has announced the formation of a dedicated task force to accelerate the development of its foundation artificial intelligence models. This strategic move comes in the wake of the resignation of Lin Junyang, the head of the company's Qwen AI division, marking the third senior executive departure from the unit this year.
Leadership Structure and Coordination
According to an internal memo seen by Reuters and distributed to employees this week, the newly formed task force will be responsible for coordinating AI initiatives across the entire Alibaba Group. The company aims to mobilize internal resources more effectively to strengthen its position in the competitive AI landscape.
The task force will be coordinated by three key executives: Alibaba Group CEO Eddie Wu, Group Chief Technology Officer Wu Zeming, and Alibaba Cloud CTO Zhou Jingren. This leadership structure is designed to pool company-wide resources and expertise to advance AI development.
Zhou Jingren will continue to lead Tongyi Laboratory, Alibaba's primary AI research arm, while also overseeing ongoing research projects. This dual responsibility ensures continuity in the company's AI research efforts despite the leadership changes.
Executive Departures and Organizational Changes
The announcement follows Lin Junyang's public resignation announcement on social media platform X, where he posted: "me stepping down. Bye, my beloved Qwen." His departure represents the third senior executive exit from the Qwen division in 2024 alone.
Earlier this year, Yu Bowen, who headed post-training at Qwen, also resigned, following the January departure of coding research scientist Hui Binyuan. These executive changes come at a critical time for Alibaba's AI ambitions, particularly following recent product updates to the Qwen model family.
The internal memo confirmed Junyang's exit and emphasized that additional resources will be allocated to AI development and research, signaling the company's commitment to maintaining momentum in this crucial technological domain.
Qwen's Market Position and Growth
Despite the leadership transitions, Alibaba's Qwen AI models have demonstrated significant growth in user adoption. According to Reuters, monthly active users for Qwen's mobile application surged to 203 million in February, representing a substantial increase from 31.05 million users in January.
This remarkable growth can be attributed to aggressive marketing campaigns launched by Chinese technology companies during the Lunar New Year holidays, which successfully attracted more users to their AI applications.
Currently, Qwen ranks as the third most popular AI product globally, trailing behind OpenAI's ChatGPT and ByteDance's Doubao application, according to data from AICPB.com, which tracks AI products worldwide.
Alibaba's AI Development Track Record
Alibaba has established itself as a significant player in the open-source AI community since 2023. The company has released more than 400 open-source Qwen models, which have been downloaded over 1 billion times globally.
This extensive library of AI models demonstrates Alibaba's substantial investment in artificial intelligence research and development, positioning the company as a major contributor to the global AI ecosystem.
The formation of the new task force represents Alibaba's latest strategic initiative to consolidate its AI efforts and maintain its competitive edge in a rapidly evolving technological landscape where artificial intelligence capabilities are becoming increasingly crucial for business success.
