Bengaluru Innovator Merges Vintage Phone with AI Technology

In a creative twist on outdated technology, a tech enthusiast from Bengaluru is capturing widespread attention by repurposing an old device into a cutting-edge tool. Pankaj Tanwar has ingeniously converted his grandfather's classic rotary phone into a fully operational AI assistant capable of responding to voice commands and performing various tasks.

From Retro Relic to Smart Companion

Tanwar shared the motivation behind his unique project, expressing dissatisfaction with conventional smart devices. "I was tired of interacting with unattractive plastic boxes. So, I decided to breathe new life into my grandfather's old rotary phone by turning it into an AI assistant. I simply pick up the receiver, say, 'Hey Kiri,' and discuss anything from booking a cab and scheduling meetings to ordering maggi, controlling lights, or summarizing emails—it handles it all seamlessly," he explained in a social media post.

Seamless Integration of Old and New

Externally, the phone retains its authentic 1970s rotary appearance, but internally, it conceals advanced components. A Raspberry Pi and a compact AI agent are discreetly housed within, enabling all smart functionalities. Tanwar noted, "It sits elegantly on my desk, looking like a typical vintage phone. No one would guess that a Raspberry Pi and a small AI agent are operating inside it."

Cost-Effective Innovation

Remarkably, this project was executed on a modest budget. Tanwar revealed, "I built the entire setup for approximately $25 using a dummy phone, a Raspberry Pi, and various hardware components." Despite its simplicity, the device rivals modern smart assistants by performing tasks such as:

  • Answering queries and providing information
  • Setting reminders and managing schedules
  • Controlling connected smart home devices

Showcasing the Project Online

Tanwar shared images and a brief video demonstrating the phone in action, though he humorously acknowledged imperfections in the demo. "I'm not sure if anyone would want a DIY guide for this, but it's incredibly fun to have this blend of vintage charm and AI on my desk. Please excuse the rough demo," he wrote, inviting feedback from the online community.

Positive Reactions from Social Media

The project has garnered enthusiastic responses across social media platforms. Users praised the innovation with comments like:

  1. "Excellent use of AI I have seen so far."
  2. "It would be so good to find the latest discount coupons for quick commerce and order items under 100 rupees."
  3. "You are a legend, man," and "What an amazing development."
  4. "Absolutely love all of your projects," and "Now this is amazing."
