In a significant boost for cross-border digital payments and tourism, Cambodia has officially become the ninth country to accept India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI). This development allows Indian travellers to make seamless payments using their existing UPI-enabled apps across the Southeast Asian nation.
Partnership Behind the Move
The initiative stems from a partnership between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the global arm of India's National Payments Corporation, and Cambodia's ACLEDA Bank. Under this arrangement, Indian visitors can scan KHQR codes, Cambodia's national QR payment standard, to complete transactions.
Over 4.5 Million Merchants Now Accept UPI
According to official announcements, Indian travellers can make digital payments at more than 4.5 million merchant outlets across Cambodia. This includes hotels, restaurants, retail stores, tourist attractions, and transportation services. The widespread acceptance eliminates the need to carry large amounts of cash, enhancing convenience and security.
Future Phase for Cambodian Travellers
In the next phase, Cambodian travellers visiting India are expected to make payments using Cambodia's domestic payment applications at UPI-enabled merchants across India, further strengthening bilateral digital payment connectivity.
What It Means for Indian Travellers
Cambodia is a popular destination among Indians, known for its affordable accommodation, UNESCO-listed attractions, and rich cultural heritage. Currency exchange was often a concern, but this development addresses that issue. It reduces dependence on cash and helps travellers save money by avoiding exchange fees and unfavorable rates.
How to Use UPI in Cambodia
- Open your UPI-enabled application.
- Scan the KHQR code at the merchant.
- Verify the amount.
- Complete the transaction using your UPI PIN.
- Receive payment confirmation.
Other Countries That Accept UPI Payments
Cambodia joins a growing list of nations that accept UPI payments, including Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, and Sri Lanka.
What Travellers Should Remember
Although UPI payments are widely accepted, travellers are advised to carry sufficient cash and a backup card for emergencies. It is also recommended to check with your bank regarding international UPI usage and ensure your app is updated before departure.
