Duffer Brothers' 'The Boroughs' Season 1 Ending Explained

The Duffer Brothers have returned with another supernatural series on a popular OTT platform, and fans are already captivated. The show, which premiered two days ago, revolves around a group of senior citizens who must protect their retirement home from a supernatural monster that preys on residents. Here is a detailed breakdown of the plot and the season 1 finale.

What Happens During 'The Boroughs' Season 1

The series begins as Sam Cooper moves into a well-known retirement home. However, things take a dark turn when his first friend at the home is brutally murdered by a supernatural creature. Sam then teams up with his neighbors, who have witnessed similar events, to uncover the truth and save everyone before it is too late. As the story progresses, it is revealed that a large group of monsters is feeding on the cerebrospinal fluid of the residents while they sleep.

Who Is Behind the Killings at The Boroughs

The creators of the retirement home, Blaine and Anneliese Shaw, along with a few other workers, are the real culprits behind the deaths and the existence of the monsters. They all serve another monster known as Mother, whose golden blood grants eternal youth. The Shaws established the retirement home to ensure a steady supply of Mother's blood, while her army enjoys an endless food source from the senior citizens.

How Does 'The Boroughs' End?

Titled 'Triple Audible,' the season 1 finale shows Sam devising a plan to stop Mother and her army from killing and feeding on the residents. He convinces the group that instead of killing Mother, they need to save her. Wally initiates the plan by sneaking Mother out during the retirement home's 75th anniversary celebration. He meets up with Sam, Art, Judy, Renee, Paz, and Sam's daughter Claire. Wally intends to leave The Boroughs and use Mother's blood to rid the world of disease, stating, 'I'm going to use it for good.'

However, Sam intervenes, revealing that he can communicate with Mother and that she wishes to return to her birthplace to die on her own terms—under a tree located in a cave in the New Mexico desert. The group uses underground tunnels to escape, while Art and Judy stay behind to hold off Blaine and her army. Along the way, Mother tells Sam she wants to free her children, and Renee and Paz agree to release the monsters and meet at a checkpoint. But an attack from Blaine and her forces reveals they are being herded. Claire mentions she has fixed a device originally built to kill monsters, now intended for the Shaws, who survive on the same blood.

When the Shaws arrive at Sam's house, the group is prepared and opens the garage door. As they aim the device at their enemies, Sam and Claire say, 'Welcome to The Boroughs, we hope you have the time of your life.' However, not everyone is safe: Judy, taken hostage and stabbed by Blaine, dies in Art's arms. Mother witnesses this and uses her magic to revive Judy, much to everyone's relief.

As Sam leads Mother to the tree's base, Blaine reappears—his seemingly dead body had drifted down the road earlier. He attacks Sam to avenge his wife's death. When Mother tries to help, Sam refuses, insisting she must do what she wants. Mother's body begins to glow as her children gather around. Blaine protests that he does not want to die, but it is too late: Mother's body explodes, killing Blaine. As a final gift from Mother, Sam briefly reunites with his deceased wife. The group is later seen enjoying a barbecue at Sam's house.
