Elon Musk has weighed in on India's declining fertility rate after new data revealed that the country's Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has dropped below the replacement level. Responding to a post on X, Musk stated that India's birth rate has fallen below replacement level and noted that among the most educated sections, it fell below replacement many years ago.
Declining Fertility Rate in India
The reaction came after the 2024 Sample Registration System report showed India's TFR declined from 2.1 to 1.9 children per woman. The report highlighted that most states are now below the replacement level of 2.1, with only a few states still above it. Delhi recorded the lowest TFR at 1.2.
Expert Concerns
Experts warn that sustained low fertility could lead to an ageing population, a shrinking workforce, and increased pressure on welfare systems. The implications of this demographic shift are significant for India's economic growth and social stability.
India's fertility decline mirrors trends seen in many developed countries, but the speed of the decline has caught some policymakers off guard. The government may need to consider policies to support families and encourage higher birth rates, while also preparing for an older population.
Elon Musk's comments have reignited the debate on population dynamics in India, with many social media users discussing the potential long-term effects. The tech billionaire has previously expressed concerns about global population decline, calling it one of the biggest risks to civilization.
