Fresh Leakage Emerges at Previously Repaired Canal Breach
A breach in the Upper Bari Doab Canal (UBDC) that was repaired just a week ago has started leaking again, according to officials. Dilpreet Singh, Executive Engineer (XEN) of the Canal Department, confirmed that the breach occurred on the same day and that efforts are underway to plug it soon.
Previous Breach and Ongoing Concerns
A week earlier, a serious rupture had occurred at the same location in the canal. The administration had expressed relief after that breach was successfully repaired. However, the fresh leakage has raised renewed fears of flooding and infrastructure failure.
Immediate Response and Deployment
Upon learning of the new leakage, department officials immediately dispatched employees to the site. XEN Dilpreet Singh stated that workers have been deployed to stop the leakage. The canal is currently running at full capacity, heightening the urgency to seal the breach. The Forest Department land nearby is already inundated with water released during the previous breach, adding to the risk of further damage.
Impact and Urgency
The administration is racing against time to plug the leakage before it worsens. The recurring failure at the same point underscores concerns about the structural integrity of the canal and the effectiveness of previous repairs. Local farmers and residents have gathered at the site, expressing anxiety over potential waterlogging and crop damage.
