According to a report from 9to5Google, the feature, which has been available on YouTube's website and mobile applications for some time, is now being trialed with a limited group of users on television platforms. This marks the first instance where the AI assistant will operate on the largest screens, enhancing the viewing experience with real-time interactions.
How the Conversational AI Functions
The report details that the conversational AI appears as an "Ask" button positioned beneath videos on YouTube. Users can select this button to access suggested prompts or utilize a microphone button to pose questions verbally. For televisions equipped with remote controls featuring built-in microphones, pressing the microphone button directly activates the AI tool. In cases where remotes lack a dedicated microphone button, users must first navigate to the Ask button to initiate the feature.
Google explains that Gemini AI works in the background to analyze video content and provide immediate responses. This enables queries such as "What ingredients are they using for this recipe?" or "What's the story behind this song's lyrics?" to be answered seamlessly during playback.
Access and Language Availability
Currently, the conversational AI tool is accessible only in English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, and Korean, and is limited to select regions. Google has not disclosed the specific areas included in the test or the exact number of users with access. The company also has not released any images showcasing how the feature appears on television screens, leaving details to user feedback from the test group.
