Hamirpur College Launches AI, Data Science Degrees

Government Degree College (GDC), Dhaaneta, located in the Nadaun Assembly constituency of Hamirpur district, has become the first government college in Himachal Pradesh to introduce B.Sc. degree programmes in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science. The announcement was made by College Principal Dr Gian Chand Rana, who stated that the courses are designed to equip students with skills essential for future technological advancements.

New Programmes Under NEP 2020

Dr Rana explained that in the rapidly evolving digital era, AI and Data Science have emerged as some of the fastest-growing fields globally. The demand for skilled professionals in these areas is rising significantly both within India and abroad. Keeping this in mind, the college has introduced the new programmes and has opened admissions for the first year of B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, and Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) for the current academic session.

The courses have been introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, ensuring that the curriculum aligns with modern educational standards and industry requirements.

Admission Details and Eligibility

Admissions will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis through both online and offline modes until July 10, 2026. Eligible candidates must have passed the 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, securing at least 40 per cent marks. Dr Rana emphasised that these programmes will provide opportunities for higher education as well as diverse career prospects.

After completing their undergraduate degrees, students can pursue M.Sc. programmes in Data Science or Artificial Intelligence, an MBA in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, and several other advanced professional courses. This pathway ensures that graduates have multiple avenues for specialisation and career growth.

Dr Rana said that the college administration and local residents have expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for introducing the new courses. He noted that these programmes would provide significant opportunities for the youth of the area, helping them gain skills that are in high demand in the global job market.

The launch of these degree programmes marks a significant step forward for higher education in Himachal Pradesh, particularly in the field of emerging technologies. With the rapid digitization of industries worldwide, the college aims to prepare students for careers in AI, data analytics, and related fields.
