In the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, a young entrepreneur is transforming local waste into a health-conscious beverage. Vishal Haldar, a commerce and software development graduate from Bacheli, has developed a herbal coffee using seeds from the chhind, a local wild date palm species. Previously considered useless in the Bastar region, these seeds are now the key ingredient in a caffeine-free coffee alternative.
The Innovation Journey
Haldar dedicated two years to researching and experimenting with local resources and online technical guides to perfect the process. His efforts paid off when his innovation secured the first position at the Innovation Mahakumbh hosted by the state-run Bastar University. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai facilitated Haldar following this achievement.
Health Benefits and Appeal
The herbal coffee is entirely caffeine-free but rich in antioxidants naturally present in chhind seeds. Haldar observed that many people drink coffee for its taste and habit rather than for mental alertness, making this a viable substitute for health-conscious consumers.
The product gained significant attention during the Innovation Mahakumbh held at Shaheed Mahendra Karma Vishwavidyalaya in Jagdalpur. Chhattisgarh Finance Minister OP Choudhary, along with university professors and visitors, tasted the brew and appreciated the effort.
Entrepreneurship and Community Impact
Haldar is currently collaborating with the Dantewada district administration's Youth UP Foundation to encourage local youth toward entrepreneurship. He aims to create employment opportunities for villagers by sourcing chhind seeds from the forests, providing them with an additional source of income.
While the project is still in the testing and development phase ahead of an official commercial launch, it highlights the potential of local resources. This herbal coffee could emerge as a distinct product from Bastar for health-conscious consumers in the future.
