IIT Madras Pioneers AI-Driven Road Safety Initiative with 'ThinnAI' System

In a significant advancement for road safety education, the Centre for Excellence on Road Safety (CoERS) at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras has developed an innovative artificial intelligence-enabled learning management system. Named 'ThinnAI', this groundbreaking platform is designed to rigorously test the awareness of traffic signs and rules among aspiring drivers across India.

Revolutionizing Driver Testing with Gamified AI Modules

Professor Venkatesh Balasubramanian, head of CoERS at IIT Madras, revealed that the ThinnAI system incorporates multiple levels of tests within video game-like modules, creating an engaging and effective assessment environment. Currently in the evaluation stage, this AI-powered platform has the potential to transform how learner's licenses are issued once it receives official clearance.

The system aims to ensure that all new drivers possess comprehensive knowledge across several critical areas:

  • Traffic signs and road rules recognition
  • Understanding of motor vehicle operations
  • Cognitive evaluation capabilities
  • Physical assessment readiness

Presently, IIT Madras is utilizing this learning management system to retrain existing drivers, demonstrating its versatility and effectiveness in improving road safety awareness at multiple levels.

Comprehensive Road Safety Initiatives Across India

Following a crucial meeting on road safety, IIT Madras director V Kamakoti outlined the institute's broader contributions to national road safety efforts. CoERS has launched an ambitious data-driven hyperlocal interventions programme targeting 100 high-risk districts across 17 Indian states, including 12 districts within Tamil Nadu.

The institute's collaborative efforts extend to practical rescue solutions as well. IIT Madras participated in a Tamil Nadu police-led initiative to develop 'Veera', a customized accident rescue vehicle specifically designed to extract victims from mangled cars. Currently operational with Chennai city police, this innovative rescue vehicle represents a model that other states and districts could potentially adopt.

National Database and Educational Advancements

IIT Madras has made substantial contributions to national road safety infrastructure through the design and implementation of eDAR (formerly called iRAD), a comprehensive national database for road crashes. This critical data layer enables the development of location intelligence that facilitates focused interventions in high-frequency accident zones across the country.

The urgency of these initiatives is underscored by sobering statistics: Tamil Nadu recorded 5,582 fatal road crashes in 2023, ranking second among all Indian states in terms of total fatal accidents. This alarming figure highlights the critical need for innovative solutions like those being developed at IIT Madras.

In addition to technological advancements, the institute is fostering future expertise through educational initiatives. IIT Madras has launched a new design course for B.Tech students that focuses on road design principles and sustainable practices, including techniques for reusing waste materials in road construction. This holistic approach addresses both immediate safety concerns and long-term infrastructure development.
