India's Developer Community Expands at Record Pace, Set to Become Global Leader

Bengaluru: In a significant revelation ahead of Microsoft's flagship Ignite event last November, Asha Sharma—who has since been elevated to CEO of Microsoft Gaming—emphasized India's growing centrality to Microsoft's artificial intelligence ecosystem. Speaking to TOI when she served as president of product and development at CoreAI, Sharma noted that India's developer community is experiencing unprecedented expansion, creating a powerful flywheel effect for innovation.

Unprecedented Growth in GitHub Developers

According to GitHub's State of the Octoverse Report 2025, India's developer ecosystem is growing at a remarkable rate. "We added more than 5 million developers in 2025—about 14% or 15% of all new GitHub developers worldwide were from India," Sharma revealed. The country now boasts over 21.9 million developers building on GitHub, with an astonishing 5.2 million joining in the past year alone.

This represents more than 14% of all new GitHub accounts globally, translating to over 1 million new developers every quarter. This marks the highest addition by any country in the world, demonstrating a 31% year-on-year growth—the fastest annual growth rate ever recorded for India.

Projected to Become World's Largest Developer Community

India has already established itself as GitHub's largest source of new developers and its second-largest developer community overall. More significantly, projections indicate that India will become the world's largest developer community within the next five years. By 2030, the country is expected to have over 57.5 million developers, solidifying its position as a global technology powerhouse.

Sharma highlighted India's exceptional contributions to open-source development, stating: "India was great both in open-source volume and contributions. It was wonderful to see India lead." She explained how this creates an amazing flywheel effect—better open-source models, improved tooling, and stronger ecosystem contributions that benefit the entire technology landscape.

Microsoft's AI Tools Empowering Indian Developers

Companies across India are increasingly leveraging Microsoft's advanced AI tools and platforms to drive innovation. Sharma noted that organizations are utilizing Azure AI and Microsoft Foundry, employing pretrained models, ML Studio, and GitHub Copilot within their own cloud environments. This approach enables them to deliver low-latency, data-sovereign AI services that meet both performance and regulatory requirements.

The Microsoft Gaming CEO also pointed to an explosion of foundation models that are pushing the efficient frontier of AI capabilities. These models are becoming not only more capable but also more accessible as the cost per GPU continues to decrease, making advanced AI tools available to a broader range of developers and organizations.

AI as a General-Purpose Technology Transforming Development

Sharma emphasized that artificial intelligence functions as a general-purpose technology that simultaneously lowers barriers to entry while raising the ceiling of what's possible. "General-purpose technologies like AI lower the floor so more people can become creators and makers—and raise the ceiling," she explained.

This transformation is reshaping the role of developers in fundamental ways. "Developers are now capable of doing much more. Their role is not just writing code—it's driving intent," Sharma noted. She added that every major platform shift in technology history has created more jobs rather than fewer, suggesting that the AI revolution will follow this pattern.

The economics of software development and the methodologies for creating software are undergoing significant changes. This evolution requires new tools and capabilities that empower not only every developer but every individual to become a maker in the digital economy.

As India continues its rapid ascent in the global technology landscape, the combination of a growing developer community, advanced AI tools, and supportive ecosystems positions the country to lead the next wave of digital innovation worldwide.
