Karnataka Launches Major AI Push for Farmers, Students

Karnataka Unveils Sweeping AI Initiatives to Boost Tech Leadership

In a strategic move to cement Karnataka's position as India's premier technological hub, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced a series of ambitious Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiatives on Friday. The comprehensive plan aims to accelerate AI adoption across diverse sectors, extending its benefits beyond Bengaluru to rural and educational domains.

AI-Powered Support for Farmers

The government plans to significantly upgrade the existing 'Raitha Kare Kendra' (farmer call centre) by integrating advanced AI technology. This enhanced system will provide farmers with rapid and reliable access to critical agricultural information through a unified digital platform. Key features include:

  • Real-time weather forecasts and climate advisories
  • Updated market prices for crops and commodities
  • Information on modern farming technologies and best practices
  • Details on government schemes and subsidies

This initiative is designed to improve accessibility and responsiveness, empowering farmers at the grassroots level with data-driven decision-making tools.

Personalized Digital Tutors for Students

In collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad, the state government will introduce AI-driven learning tools across schools. This project, with an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore, will develop personalized self-learning digital tutors powered by AI.

Officials from the IT and BT department emphasize that this technology will create an engaging and enjoyable learning experience, giving students the feeling of having a personal tutor. The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 12.3 lakh students from classes 8 to 12 by:

  1. Helping solve complex mathematics problems through step-by-step guidance
  2. Simplifying intricate science concepts with interactive explanations
  3. Providing customized digital assistance for difficult lessons

Strengthening AI Research and Innovation

To bolster the AI research ecosystem, the government proposed establishing the Bangalore Robotics and AI Innovation Zone (BRAINz) at the AI and Robotics Technology Park (ART-PARK) under the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). This initiative will involve collaboration with ISRO and the state-owned Keonics.

Additionally, a Centre of Excellence for AI will be set up at IIIT Raichur with an estimated investment of Rs 5 crore. This center will focus on promoting advanced research, innovation, and technology development in artificial intelligence.

Bridging the Urban-Rural Technology Gap

The government plans to establish modern AI data labs in approximately 50 government colleges, primarily located in Tier 2 and 3 cities. This Rs 10 crore initiative, supported under the Centre's AI Mission, aims to democratize access to AI technology and bridge the urban-rural divide.

Additional AI-Driven Initiatives

The comprehensive AI strategy includes several other significant components:

  • Development of AI-based paperless registration under Kaveri 3.0 software with Rs 65 crore funding
  • Implementation of AI-based facial recognition attendance systems at anganwadis, schools, colleges, and hostels
  • Transformation of the existing helpline for food and civil supplies into 'Smart Annavani' using AI technology
  • Introduction of lessons in AI, machine learning, cloud computing, and automation engineering at government polytechnics and engineering colleges

These initiatives come as Bengaluru ranks fifth among the world's top 50 cities in AI and big data, highlighting the state's strong foundation in technological innovation. The government's multi-pronged approach demonstrates a commitment to leveraging AI for sustainable development and inclusive growth across Karnataka.
