Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the United States will require hundreds of thousands of skilled trade workers to build the infrastructure necessary for the country's artificial intelligence ambitions. To address this need, the social media giant has launched America’s Workforce Academy (AWA), a new initiative offering free training and direct job pathways in skilled trades.
Partnerships and Scope
Meta stated that it is proud to collaborate with the National Urban League, the Associated Builders and Contractors, CBRE, and community partners across the nation, including the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, STRIVE, Boone County Economic Development Corporation (Indiana), Richland Parish Chamber of Commerce (Louisiana), Workforce Solutions Borderplex (Texas), and the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.
Demand for Skilled Workers
The company emphasized that the U.S. labor market needs hundreds of thousands of fiber technicians, welders, plumbers, electricians, and other skilled trade workers. AWA builds on the success of Meta's earlier Level-Up fiber installation training program, which received 35,000 applications within its first seven days.
Zuckerberg’s Statement
In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg highlighted that the growth of AI will significantly increase demand for trade workers. He wrote: "America is going to need hundreds of thousands of skilled tradespeople to build the infrastructure for our country to lead in AI. People need access to the education and opportunity to secure these jobs. We believe the future is for everyone. Today, we're launching America's Workforce Academy with academic and workforce partners to provide free training and direct pathways to jobs building this infrastructure. We want to deliver personal superintelligence for everyone -- and we want as many people as possible to help build that future with us."
